    Una buena coordinación entre el cirugano maxilofacial y el ortodoncista es imprescindible para obtener un resultado óptimo en el tratamiento de los pacientes que precisan cirugía ortognática.

    El cirujano maxilofacial debe entender el plan de tratamiento desde el punto de vista ortodóntico y el ortodoncista debe ser capaz de identificar los objetivos del tratamiento ortodóntico pre-quirúrgico y conocer las limitaciones de la cirugía ortognática.

    Los resultados satisfactorios en tratamientos combinados de ortodoncia y cirugía ortognática dependen de un buen diagnóstico y plan de tratamiento de la deformidad dentofacial, y de una buena integración de los conocimientos entre los profesionales implicado en el tratamiento. El objetivo de este artículo es resumir las principales características de diagnóstico, objetivos, plan de tratamiento incluyendo plan de retención, que el ortodoncista y cirujano deben conocer para obtener un buen resultado de su trabajo en equipo.

    A good coordination between the orthodontist and the surgeon is essential in order to achieve a good outcome for the orthognathic surgery patient.

    The surgeon should understand the treatment plan from the orthodontist point of view and the orthodontist should understand and identify the goals of the pre-surgical orthodontic treatment. as well as the limitations of the surgical treatment.

    Satisfactory outcomes are the result of a good diagnosis and treatment of the dentofacial deformity and a good integration of the knowledge of the different specialists implied. The aim of this article is to summarize the main features of the diagnosis, objectives, and treatment plan, including the retention phase, which both the surgeon and orthodontist should follow in order to achieve a good treatment outcome.
