  • Resumen
    • The Bundesarchiv-Militärarchiv (Federal Military Archive) in Freiburg i. Br. contains a large and nearly unknown amount of documents related to German oversea history. The material consists mostly of reports from the commanders of ships stationed at the so called "Auslandsstationen": East- and West Coast of America, East- and West Africa, East Asia and Australia. The reports start with the first visits of Brazilian harbors in 1851 and end with the outbreak of World War I. The files furthermore contain reports from German and foreign diplomats and residents overseas, printed documents like governmental orders, reports etc., and German and foreign newspapers to the subject. So the reports often include political, economic, social and military affairs, too, making the material is highly valuable for diplomatic and cultural history. A great part of the reports is copied on microfiche, which are easy to reproduce, making it easy to use the source material outside the archive.
