  • The article analyses the information available in England about colonial Brazil. The first books about Brazil in English literature were translations, mainly from French travel books, later from Dutch sources about the Dutch colony in Northern Brazil as for instance Nieuhof's travel book published in Churchill's A collection of voyages and travels in 1704. Direct translations from Portuguese sources are very rare, we only have the Tratados from Fernão Cardim, first published in English translation in Purchas' Hakluytus postumus in 1625. In the early colonial time, Anthony Knivet, also published by Purchas, gives the most detailed account about the land. Later on, many English travellers to the Pacific gave a few marginal descriptions about Brazil. In historiographic works, only the reasons for the failure of the Dutch colony in North Brazil and the findings of gold and diamonds in Minas Gerais are discussed.
