  • Resumen
    • In the 18th and 19th centuries, Minas Gerais was almost the richest and most dynamical Brazilian province. As a consequence of the gold rush (ca. 1700-1750), Minas had a very rapid process of urbanisation. Historians used to explain this process as a simple side effect of economic factors (search from gold, agriculture and cattle raising). Our aim in this article is to demonstrate that religion was as important to the formation of the network of cities and villages in Minas as the so called "infrastructural" factors. In order to show the stark influence of religious ideas/ practices on the very early moments of a village formation (protourbanisation), this paper analyses the function and significance of the religious patrimônios.
