Resumen de Rutas comerciales atlánticas: una aproximación inquisitorial

María Berenice Moreno Florido

  • The social archetype of the "sailor" needs a rundown analysis for getting a full and clear vision of the existent reality during the Ancien Régime in general, but especially on the Canary archipelago. The documentation that we have used are the inquisitorial records, based on trials against foreign sailors. Firstly, for an appropriate understanding it is necessary to take a look at the international theatre, characterised by disputes in this period, and to analyse the reign of Felipe II, showing how contraband trade, a pirate and corsair activity, was very significant in the waters bordering the Canaries. In this way, this strategic place between three continents, Europe, Africa and America, has been influenced by the political situation. Furthermore, we will examine more closely the most significant sea routes, focusing on important goods and ports. Likewise, we will take a look on diverse voyages that link all over Europe. Finally, we will study a significant section of the European Atlantic Ocean.
