Cultural and religious identities in Latin America in the face of globalisation [MANUEL M. MARZAL] To analyse the emergence of identities and conflicts in the ongoing globalisation of Latin America, it must be remembered that the continent already underwent two globalisations before the present: the first was spawned by the colonial conquest which brought native America into the western world and into the Church, and a subsequent one, after independence, when these countries received human influxes from other cultures and underwent political and social upheavals. Similarly, and as for the cultural and religious identities of the continent following the European conquest, the author considers that the origin of Latin America is to be found in the confluence of the Spanish and Portuguese cultures with the Pre-Colombian and African cultures, in a process deeply marked by racial and cultural crossbreeding. In this regard, there are four major landmarks which have had a decisive impact on the political and religious configuration of the Latin American identity in the centuries spanning the conquest and independence: the occupation of native America by whites, the appearance of crossbreeding, the presence of blacks and the catholic substrate of Latin America. Moreover, and in the current process of globalisation, in recent decades a series of factors has contributed to configuring a new political and social panorama in the continent: neo-liberal ideas and the impact of the multiplication of exchanges, the new attitude to indigenism and the birth of the pro-Indian movement, the development of Christian pluralism and the emigration of Latin-Americans abroad.
