Los gitanos en Macedonia , por Eben Friedman Eben Friedman es investigador del Centro Europeo para los Asuntos de las Minorías de Flensbug, Alemania, y tras un periodo de investigación sobre la población gitana en Macedonia, a principios del año 2000, concluyó la absoluta integración de la etnia gitana en este país. No solamente basándose en sus estudios, sino en una encuesta de 1996 realizada entre los macedonios, quedaba claro que el 59% mostraba aversión hacia el pueblo gitano, pero el rechazo hacia otras minorías que vivían en el país (albaneses, judíos, turcos y búlgaros) era aún mucho mayor, llegando a un porcentaje del 87%.
Según los expertos, los gitanos llegaron a la actual Macedonia entre los siglos XIII y XV, existiendo, desde entonces, una convivencia pacífica con las poblaciones vecinas no gitanas. A diferencia de otros lugares de Europa, la persecución de los gitanos en esta zona ha sido casi imperceptible entre los 53.879 ciudadanos de etnia gitana que viven en Macedonia (según censo del 2000), aunque varias ONG del país indican que la población gitana real es casi dos veces mayor que la oficial. En lo que sí se ponen de acuerdo unos y otros es que la lengua materna de cerca del 80% de los romà de Macedonia es el romanò.
The Gipsy population in Macedonia, Eben Friedman Eben Friedman is a researcher of the European Center for Minority Issues in Flensbug (Germany), and after a period of research concerning the Gipsy community in Macedonia at the beginning of the year 2000, he concluded the absolute integration of Roma ethnic in the country. The study is not only based in his studies, but also in a survey made in 1996 among Macedonians, where it was made clear that 59% of them showed some aversion towards the Gipsy population, but the major detachment towards other minorities in the country (Albanians, Jews, Turkish and Bulgarians) was even higher, reaching a percentage of 87%.
According to experts, Roma arrived at the current territory of Macedonia between the 13th. and the 15th. century. Since then, the coexistence between them and their neighbours of non-Gipsy origin has been peaceful. Unlike other places in Europe, the prosecution of Gipsies in this area has been almost unnoticed among the 53.879 Gipsy inhabitants who currently live in Macedonia (according to the year 2000 census), although many local NGO point out that Roma population is two times higher than the official figures. What nobody argues about is concerning the language; the mother tongue spoken by almost 80% of Roma in Macedonia is Romanò.
