El cabildo catedral de Canarias: una élite socioeconómica e ideológica de ámbito regional

    El Cabildo Catedral canario durante la Edad Moderna fue el reflejo de las transformaciones experimentadas en la sociedad regional y, especialmente, en el seno de la oligarquía local en su lucha por el control socioeconómico del Archipiélago. Entre las funciones adscritas a la institución por la Corona se encontraba la recaudación y administración de las contribuciones del diezmo eclesiástico, además de otras de menor relevancia. A las rentas obtenidas de éstas, unieron los prebendados numerosos ingresos logrados de su dedicación al servicio de la Catedral o su participación como miembros activos de tribunales como el Santo Oficio o de la Santa Cruzada. Su posición, capacidad económica e influencias sobre las autoridades locales, regionales o nacionales fueron factores primordiales para entender la estrategia seguida por algunas de las principales familias del grupo de poder regional a la hora de conseguir una prebenda en el Cabildo Catedral. Los capitulares no sólo se convirtieron en benefactores económicos de sus familiares, sino que también se vieron obligados a favorecer a las instituciones que impulsaron su candidatura como prebendado ante el monarca o eran centros del poder de sus parentelas.

    The canary City Hall Cathedral was the reflection, during the Modern Age, of the transformations experienced in the regional society and, specially, in the breast of the local oligarchy in its fight for the socioeconomic control of the Archipielago. Among the functions adhering to the institution by the Crown was found the collection and administration of the contributions of the ecclesiastical tithe, besides other of smaller importance to the incomes obtained of these, they prebendary added numerous incomes obtained of the dedication to the service of the cathedral or their participation as active court members like the Holy Position or of the Saint Crusade. Their position, economic capacity and influences on the local, region or national authorities were fundamental factors to understand the strategy followed by some of the main families of the regional group power to obtain a prebends in the City Hall Cathedral. The people with rights to vote in the ecclesiastical community did not only become economic benefactors of their relatives, but also they were obliged to favour the institutions that prompted their candidacy as prebendary before the monarch or were centers of power of their kinkolks.
